Superfood, originally a marketing term, describes food with supposed health benefits. The term is not commonly used by nutritional experts and many dispute whether these particular foods have the health benefits claimed by their advocates. In 2007, the superfood category was forecasted to become a billion dollar global industry by 2011, with thousands of new products expected to enter the marketplace.
Maness creates concrete sculptures that are modified assemblages and reveal a new visualization of the term superfood. By taking recognizable food shapes and growing them to an extreme, the new superfoods become abstract in form. Highlighting that the sculpture outlives the original organic shape.
